Fun DIY Pinata

pinata blogNo birthday party in our home is complete without a pinata – and making the pinata itself may actually be just as much fun as the actual candy-filled destruction!

What You Need:

  • balloon
  • newspaper
  • tape
  • flour
  • water
  • paint
  • string/shoelace (something for the pinata to hang by)
  • and, of course, lots of candy!

Steps:

  1.  Cut the news paper into strips about an inch wide and 3-4 inches wide
  2.  Combine equal parts flour and water using a whisk to create a paste (*note: thicker paste takes longer to dry but is more sturdy!)
  3. You may want to lay down some extra newspaper for an easy cleanup of the workspace
  4. Inflate the balloon
  5. Now, take one strip of newspaper at a time and dip it into your paste (squeeze the excess off with your fingers) apply to the balloon
  6. Cover the whole balloon with your pasty paper
  7. Let it dry overnight
  8. Cut a small slit in your pinata to stick things through
  9. Fill it up with candy (optional: colorful tissue paper, stickers, or toys)
  10. Tape the slit shut
  11. Attach string to hang your masterpiece! We like to wrap it around a couple of times to ensure that it is supported (*use extra tape to hold in place)
  12. It is good to cover the string and the slit with extra paper-mache, especially if you are using tape to decorate
  13. Get creative with paint, cardboard or toilet paper rolls for your final decorating! (*we made a pig by using tp rolls for the snout)
